All about Link Paths
In several locations on the Home Page Construction Kit you are asked to enter the "Link Path". This is the path that tells your web browser where to find the document or web site that you wish to link to.
There are several types of links that you can use with the Home Page Construction Kit.
Relative Links
Relative links refer to other home page or html documents that reside inside your Home Page folder. All you have to do is name the document in this space provided. For example, if your link path is Homework then you must have a home page document with that name residing at the same level as the current document within your Home Page folder.
If you have several folders within your Home Page folder you must name the folder first. So, if your Homework document is inside a folder called 'TeacherStuff' inside your Home Page folder then your link would be TeacherStuff/Homework.
You can mix and match Home Page Construction Kit documents and full html documents in your web site if you choose. Just make sure that your link path names the document exactly. You may have an html document called 'MathOutline.html' inside a folder called 'Courses'. In this case, the link path would be Courses/MathOutline.html
Absolute Links
Absolute links are when you want to link to a web site or a home page document that is NOT within your Home Page folder.
Links to other Web Sites
To link to another Web Site, enter the entire URL path including the 'http://' part of the URL. For example, to create a link to the Richmond School District home page, the link path would be http://www.sd38.bc.ca
Links to other users on your FirstClass System
To link to a home page document in someone else's Home Page folder within the same FirstClass server you must include the path to the user's account. This is done by preceding the link path with '/~UserID/' where 'UserID' is the person's website id. For example, to link to a home page document called Favourites in John Doe's Home Page folder you would use /~jdoe/Favourites as your link path. (Assuming that John Doe's web site ID is jdoe)
Other Types of Links
There are many other kinds of objects that you can use as links within the Home Page Construction Kit. For example, you may wish to provide a link to your calendar, your Address Book, or to a document in your Home Page folder so that you can have people download the document. The process is the same. If the document or alias to your calendar or address book resides inside your Home Page folder, you just have to name it in the link path.
Examples:
Links to documents for Downloading
To link to a document, make sure that you give the document the 3 letter Windows extension so that both Macintosh and Windows users will be able to download and access the file. Adobe PDF documents must end with .PDF, Claris/AppleWorks documents end with .CWK, Microsoft Word Documents end with .DOC. When a visitor to your site clicks on the link, the file will be downloaded to their computer.
Links to your Calendar
If you have a calendar you can hold the <SHIFT> key down on your keyboard and drag your calendar in to your Home Page folder. This will create an alias to your calendar. Your link path could then be as simple as Calendar, the name of your Calendar.
Hint: To have it link to your Calendar and display the month view, use the link path Calendar/?FormID=158
If you are linking to your Calendar, you must also alter the permissions on your calendar so that people visiting your web site will be able to view the calendar.
Click on the Calendar and choose Permissions from the Conferencing Menu
This will bring up the permission form.
You must edit the "Who" portion of this form.
Type "Internet" in the Who field then go to the Permissions section and click on the icons to activate only the ones shown.
Links to your Address Book or Contacts Folder
If you would like to create a link to your Address Book, just <SHIFT> drag your address book or Contacts folder in to your Home Page Folder to create an alias there. The Link Path would then simply be Address Book or Contacts.
