Adding Content
You can start adding content at any time. To add content, simply start typing in the message portion of each of your Home Page Construction Kit pages. FirstClass supports full stylized text and will render it to the web without your having to learn any html coding. You can add graphics and links to other documents within each of your pages.
This document will give you some tips on how to present professional looking web pages.
Different platforms (Mac and PC) and different Web Browsers (Explorer, Netscape, Opera, Safari, Firefox, etc,) all handle web pages slightly differently. Things often look different depending on the type of computer and web browser the person is using. The Home Page Construction Kit has been tested on both Macintosh and PC computers using a wide range of different web browsers. The recommendations below are made with these different factors in mind. Please make sure you test the display of your web pages from as many different combinations as possible so that you are sure that your content is being displayed properly.
Fonts - Colours - Sizes
Font
As mentioned earlier, the BEST cross platform font is Verdana. More and more you see professional looking web pages using this font. Of course, you have the option of using whatever font that you wish, but you must keep in mind that every user who view's your web page must have that font also on their computer. Verdana is installed by default on all current Macintosh and Windows computers.
Colours
Choose colours for your text in keeping with your colour scheme. The FirstClass Colour picker gives you 16 different colour choices from the pop-up selector, but you can click on "Other" to select from a greater range or even define your own custom colours.
Sizes
Small is better. It is always best to keep the amount and size of your text to a minimum. Home Page Construction Kit's navigation bars use small, readable text. A 10 point Verdana for your text body is very readable by even those monitors set for high resolutions. Use 12 point Bold text in as your headlines.
Graphics
The more graphics you have on your page, the slower your page will load. When you are designing and viewing your pages on a high speed network this is not an issue. However, if people are viewing your Web site over a dial-up modem connection, they may not wait around long enough for your pages to load.
FirstClass uses a relatively new file format called PNG (Portable Network Graphics) that is both cross platform and compressed.
TIP: The BEST way to insert any graphic file in to your content is to use Copy and Paste. Select your graphic in your graphics program and choose Copy from the file menu. Switch over to your FirstClass Home Page document and click where you want the graphic to be inserted and choose PASTE from the file menu. FirstClass will automatically convert the image to a PNG image for you.
Once the graphic has been inserted in to your text you can resize it and choose the text wrapping features of the FirstClass Client to control how your text will be displayed around your graphic.
To do this, click on the graphic and resize with , and position with
Animated GIF files
Many people enjoy using Animated gif files in their web pages. Any animated GIF inserted in to your home page documents will be displayed properly in a web browser. To insert an animated GIF file, click where you want it to be inserted into your document and choose Edit -> Insert -> Insert Image and select the file from your computer. This will insert it to your home page and may display it using a generic icon like this - . (The display of the gif
image will depend on whether or not your version of the FirstClass client supports GIF images. You can view your page in a Web Browser, and if necessary, use the resizing and text wrapping features of the FirstClass Client accordingly.
